“The Gratitude Goddess” Shanna Maretsky
“If the only prayer you said in your whole life was,”thank you,” that would suffice.”
-Meister Eckhart
Thank you.
Is it possible that those two little words could be the key to abundance and even better, true happiness?
I’m no stranger to the law of attraction. For years, though, attracting joy and abundance seemed impossible.
Impossible, because I didn’t believe it.
Impossible, because I focused on the multitude of negative circumstances that had come my way and while at first I couldn’t actually see it, it became evident that the more I focused on the negative, the more it was that negativity seemed to surround me.
I was buried. Day after day I was caught up in a cycle of misery. I hated my job, my personal life was in shambles, and I was so far away from being my true, authentic self that I’d often cry myself to sleep wondering how I got myself into this place.
Who’s life was I living? How did I get here? But more importantly, HOW do I change it?
For me, changing my life meant creating a clean slate, and starting all over. I left the familiarity of my roots in California, and transplanted myself to Salt Lake City, Utah. It was drastic move: a complete gamble. I had the safety and security of my family to count on, but beyond that, I had no idea what I was going to do.
I made superficial changes, got a new hairstyle, went to parties, found a job to get me by, and all in all I was making it. I had started over, but didn’t
have any true direction. Six months into this “recovery” process, I wasn’t really any better off. I realized that I had run away from some of the physical issues that were holding me back but continued to allow the negativity concerning what I was lacking to dictate the course of my reality.
“It’s the law of attraction,” my mom said. I had heard it so many times, I’m sure at one point I just stopped listening. But as it turns out, the simple principle of saying Thank You was the answer I had unknowingly been seeking all along.
She simply pointed out to me that what you focus on expands, and when you focus on the goodness in your life, you create more of it.
Maybe that was it. Could it really be that simple?
Oprah Winfrey says it perfectly, “I live in the space of thankfulness — and I have been rewarded a million times over for it. I started out giving thanks for small things, and the more thankful I became, the more my bounty increased.”
I began to wonder…How could I live in a space of thankfulness?
And suddenly, as easily as you can turn on a light switch, I changed my mindset.
Look at how much I had to be thankful for. I often said, out loud even, that on my very worst day in this new life of mine, it could never even compare to the unhappiness I was living in before. How could I not be thankful?
For the first time, I was in control. I could make the choice, because it is a choice, to BE positive and BE in gratitude and BE happy.
When you can learn to be grateful no matter what happens in your life, and say thank you for everything your entire world will change.
Say thank you to a friend for being there when you needed her.
Say thank you for the sunshine on a warm spring day.
Say thank you for the morning cup of coffee that motivates and comforts you.
Say thank you—even for the challenges, seeing them as opportunities for learning and growth.
Say thank you, because you can know with an unshakable faith that no matter what happens, you’ll get through it.
Say thank you for the trust to believe that it’s true.
Now, hear this though. Just because it’s SIMPLE, doesn’t mean it’s EASY. There are times when it’s hard to be grateful. It’s in those moments however, when you feel the LEAST thankful, that you can benefit the MOST from it.
This past November, I embarked on an experiment. Why wait till Thanksgiving to be thankful? I chose to recognize one thing, every day for the entire month that I was grateful for. I would then post these acknowledgements to the universe, and in this age of technology, my public statement came in the form of a Facebook status update.
What happened next astonished me. It became increasingly easy to find things to be thankful for. At one point I even said it was hard to limit myself to just one public outpour of gratitude per day. So I didn’t hold back. Friends and family soon commented, “What a great idea, I’m going to do this too!” I was quickly distributing a gift to everyone I knew-the gift of gratitude.
The more I acknowledged the goodness that surrounded me, the more I had to be grateful for, and as if it were magic, more good things began to happen and I was blissfully more aware of them then ever.
Needless to say, the gratitude didn’t stop at the end of the month, or even the end of the year. It multiplied and flourished and continues to surprise me every single day.
I’d like to share this simple gift with you, too.
Focus on gratitude.
“Gratitude truly opens your eyes to the incredible abundance that is all around you. Make gratitude your constant companion and that abundance becomes yours to live.”- Ralph Marston

What a great piece Laura and Larry! There is so much to be Thankful for as long as you’re willing to look for it. I won’t share all of the things in my daily activity that I am Thankful for, but it ranges from the car starting on the first try to being able to pay a bill.
From The Secret, I carry a Gratitude Rock in my pocket everyday. It’s s polished stone I picked up at some gift shop, but it is with me everyday and reminds me to be Grateful and Thankful.
I appreciate you two for your words of wisdom!

Inspirational article and great advice. I confess when I see any reference to “Law of Attraction” I cringe – simply because so many people interpret that to mean wish for something and eventually it will appear – when in fact there really needs to be some focused action included. Well, that aside, what I am grateful for today is being able to walk. Took a slight tumble off the stairs outside my house yesterday and scraped my legs up pretty badly on the concret steps below. Outside of feeling foolish, I am SO grateful I didn’t break anything! And as I slowly and somewhat painfully shuffle around my office today I am reminded to slow down a bit and think before I take that next step!
Aloha Laura,
I love your post on gratitude and it is 100% the truth. I have found anytime I am not feeling frustrated, etc is a time when I am not in gratitude, so I have pictures and reminders all around to remember to “live in gratitude” always!
My son and I had a bedtime routine of saying 3 things we were grateful for every night. This continued until he became to old to be “tucked in” and now we remind each other about being grateful and to always be happy!
Thank you for a beautiful post!
Aloha,
Kellie
laura, thank you so much for sharing your daughter’s wise words. it’s so easy to forget how SIMPLE life can be. we love to make it complex and hard for ourselves… but it really is that simple. “attitude of gratitude” PERIOD.
i appreciate her suggestion of being thankful first for the small things, and one a day. i can do that. i have a little journal by my bed that i write in: 3 things i’m thankful for when i wake up and 3 things i’m thankful for as i go to sleep. today i am thankful for YOU laura!
sending good thoughts your way!
love,
melissa
Thank you Melissa,
My daughter IS quite wise for such a young women. She teaches me all the time and I thank God for her every day! That is a wonderful practice you have to keep the little book by your bed..I write in mine at the end of the day, but I think you’re right, that starting the day with three gratitude thoughts would be wonderful as well.
thank you for all your positive energy!
Laura
Aaah, such profound effects from such a simple action ~ sometimes the most powerful things are the ones we overlook, right?
Your daughter is a credit to you, Limitless Laura, and her journey is a credit to her perseverance and innate strength, and this goddess applauds you both!

I am so thankful I found your blog post! You will no doubt enjoy my recent post on my blog, as it fits in very nicely with what you are saying. I too, embarked on a daily gratitude journey just a couple weeks ago. I love it! It is opening my eyes more and more to things, situations, people etc, to be thankful for.
Thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed your blog page today!
Bless you!

Hi Larry and Laura,
thank you for the lovely article on gratefulness and the beautiful photos.
Making your gratitute public sounds like a great practice, not only are you focusing on the appreciation when you think about it, you also think it again as you are writing it and you are reading it as well.
The other day I thought about how greatful I am for my car, making it possible to drive from A to B to Z and then I thought about how much I appreciate all the people work and time that has gone into creating the car and the roads and traffic lights. It felt really good.
Love and Joy

Great Post
Living in gratitude is the key to law of attraction.
Hi Laura,
It certainly sounds as though you are spinning circles around your former self. Thanks so much for this post and for acknowledging that it isn’t particularly easy to do all the time. I really love the idea of keeping a gratitude journal and yet, find my ‘busy-ness’ gets in the way of getting it done. I do however, try to give thanks as often as I can think of it throughout the day.
Hi Laura,
what an awesome journey you embarked on to find your place of peace and security. Its wonderful to think that such a small thing as an action of gratitude can put such a different slant on our attitude towards an outcome.
In my experience an expression of gratitude only ever results in the positive and makes me feel good.
Cheers
Caryn
I experienced the same freedom several years ago when I was challenged to “thank God in everything…” I started thanking Him for even the bad things. It was my way of telling God, “I don’t like this one stinking bit, but I know that YOU are still in charge.” The freedom and peace I felt was amazing, and still is.
Thank you for the reminder — of who God is and why He wants us to be grateful.
Great post, Laura! Even though he wasn’t really a Law of Attraction kind of guy, I was reminded in reading your post of something Jim Rohn said. When talking about income, he said, “People say that when they get more money, they’ll be more generous and manage their money better, but how are you going to be able to manage a lot of money if you can’t manage a little money?” You are right on the money in pointing out the need to start where we are.
Hello Laura
What a great article that is full of the truths about life. This one in particular, “When you can learn to be grateful no matter what happens in your life, and say thank you for everything your entire world will change.”
In the book of Phillippians Paul wrote these word, I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. Laura I really enjoyed reading your post. Learning to say thank yo about everything will change one’s life.
Thanks
